Mystery Quote

"Evidently, Mr. [president] wants to shield virtually any communications that take place within the White House compound on the theory that all such talk contributes in some way, shape or form to the continuing success and harmony of an administration. Taken to its logical extreme, that position would make it impossible for citizens to hold a chief executive accountable for anything. He would have a constitutional right to cover up.

"Chances are that the courts will hurl such a claim out, but it will take time.

"One gets the impression that Team [president] values its survival more than most people want justice and thus will delay without qualm. But as the clock ticks, the public's faith in Mr. [president] will ebb away for a simple reason: Most of us want no part of a president who is cynical enough to use the majesty of his office to evade the one thing he is sworn to uphold — the rule of law."

So, who do you think said it, and about who??

Update: here's a comment that I found in a thread over at Crooks and Liars...

Snow says they want to avoid a Perry Mason spectacle? In a Perry Mason spectacle the questioner (Mason, whose analogous role here = Congress) asks tough probing questions that ultimately reveal the identity of a guilty criminal.

So the role of the guilty criminal, in Snow's Mason analogy, would be... ?

Thank you, Your Honor. No more questions.

I don't know who did it, but I'm also thinking it's probably someone in the Bush admin talking about Clinton, back when Clinton was president.

I wonder how The White House is going to treat Snow if his surgery turns up something serious. Will they just cut him loose with nary a fare-thee-well? How much you wanna bet they do to him what they did to his predecessor?

I don't know how these people live with their hypocrisy and constant dissonance. They don't seem to mind their own internal contradictions ever. Yesterday Bush stood in front of people who were wearing hats and uniforms to say that the Democratic house was just being theatrical. He couldn't have looked more ludicrous. Ignorant public liars.

...And more and more people are seeing them for what they are...liars. The big question is have they done irreversable harm to our govt? Have they already crossed the rubicon? Would we know if they have?
