Murrow on Dissent

Via Keith Olberman, at crooks&liars the words of Edward R. Murrow:

"We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty, We must remember always that accusation is not proof, and that conviction depends upon evidence and due process of law. We will not walk in fear - one, of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of un-reason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men; Not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate, and to defend causes that were - for the moment - unpopular."

...and Rummy's calling US facists?

It's a fantastic commentary. I am so grateful Olbermann was compelled to speak his mind. It's what I've been longing to hear. I want more.

"an age of un-reason"

but really the rhetoric is so awful from so many conservative Christians (NOT all - don't get me wrong, i don't discriminate on the basis of ideology, just on the amount of bullshit someone spouts on a given day.)

so many times i see churches whose slogans are like, "Faith with Reason" or "Reason with Faith." You know, two concepts that seem to be so different - but they're really not. and too often their concept of "reason" is just semantics meant to bolster their own unstable faith. pisses me off.

i saw "good night and good luck" a month or so ago and i remember getting full-body shivers during Murrow's speech, so ably portrayed (or, as some have said, "channeled") by David Strathairn. i think that's the highest accomplishment of an artist - and george c and co. managed it beautifully. i LOVE that movie.

Hey Robin Andrea,

Mee toooo I want more! This is the proof of the great fallacy of the "liberal media" : if the media is just out for the bucks, then where are all the liberal and progressive voices in the media. I count ONE - Olberman.

Oh, Andi - thank you for bringing up that movie! I haven't seen it yet - (ok I'm busted - I'm too cheap to go out, so I wait til they're on dvd) I forgot the name, and so couldn't look it up. I just bought it online. Can't wait.

Hey, POP.

I teared up when I was watching it. You can tell when someone is speaking from the heart, and we haven't gotten enough of that lately - from our pols nor from our media.

Hey, enigma4ever.

Goddess! Rummy is a good name for him, huh? He's addicted to power and lies. It amazes me, the brazen fearmongering and projection.
