Our Trickle Down Society

As a father of four sons who have all been heavily involved with athletics, I was very disturbed by a recent survey conducted by the Citizenship Through Sports Alliance, a national coalition of sports organizations that includes the
NCAA and three of the four major professional leagues. The survey found that parents and coaches have lost sight of children's best interests and place excessive emphasis on winning instead of sportsmanship, character development and plain old fun.

The only thing "trickling down" from our leaders is this power grubbing "win at all cost" mentality. Character and ethics, and even fun are old hat. The only thing to be admired in our brave new world is raw, naked power, and the person who brings in the win!

I have seen this coming for years. The only sport I really enjoyed was high school and college football. I remember a time when the game was played for school spirit and love of the game. Now even in high school it's all about the win. Win at all cost. Local businesses have started 'compensating' high school players (which is pretty much the same as paying them) with cars, free meals, tv's, and stereo equipment.
When you get right down to it, it's all about greed. The love of money.

WOW, I thought that was illegal!!! We had a UCONN player (boy's team) last year who got booted off the team for taking a bunch of merchandise that was freely offered him (he was not found to have solicited it).

It's the loss of any kind of fairplay, sportsmanship, or moral code that chaffs me. When I was in intramural sports, it was all about character and integrity, and if you won, well that was the icing.
