The Lowly Dandilion

Have I mentioned that I love dandilions? Edible - flowers as well as leaves. Bright and cheery, good in drought or flood, shade or searing sun. We had a neighbor who had no love for yard care, and his weeds loosed seeds on the prevailing wind that covered our front lawn.

Hubby has been picking them every day, for 15 - 20 min. One of these days the lawn will be clear. Thank goodness that neighbor moved out of the neighborhood.

Lawns are like hummers: a huge waste of resources. I wonder what people will say about me, with my refusal to plant grass where hardy native plants ("weeds") are already growing.

But dandelions are praise-worthy! If they were hard to grow, they be revered for their bright color, their interesting leaves, and their beautiful seed heads. I have a book at home chock full of recipes for dandelions--as you point out, using every part of the plant.
