October Apple Picking

We went apple picking this afternoon, something that has been a fall tradition in Hubby's family for 38 years. We have always gone to Belltown Orchards in Glastonbury CT. Somehow the last 4 years or so, this orchard has been tightening their policies and rules(almost to the point of hostility). I'm not sure why, it could be because a new generation has taken over and they're afraid of lawsuits. It may just be the general paranoia after 9/11.

It has always been that the customer had the run of the place, and we always had a great time exploring the orchard, and sitting by the stream to eat an apple in the sun. This afternoon it was all: nothing down there to see, stay on the path, the haywagon will pick you up.

We asked the apple guy where the punpkins were, and he wouldn't tell us! Just get on the hayride, they'll take you around! We started talking about how facism was on the march, and this guy came over and got in our face! Scary...

After we rode off in the haywagon, we found the punkins, and scooped up a bunch for fall decorations. Posted by Picasa

Wow! It still sounds like a good time, even if the restrictions have increased. You will be sending me an apple pie, right?

i love apple season here, too. they've introduced a new hybrid called honey crisp that is somewhere between a granny smith and a golden delicious - it's almost too juicy for pie, but damn it's a good eatin' apple. the perfect balance of sweet apple-y tartness, running-down-your-mouth juiciness, and perfect crunchy texture.

i still think it's funny that apples used to be used only to make hard cider. apples may just be the perfect food - i await apple season here with much anticipation. there are apple orchards EVERYWHERE in our neighborhood. when i was still on my bike, i'd take a 30-minute loop past some of them and drink in that slightly alcoholic smell of rotting apple windfalls - i know it sounds gross, but it's actually a pretty yummy smell.

ok you got me rambling about apples, i guess i will have to make a pie this weekend. long overdue.

maybe mutsu instead of honey-crisp, though. or both - what the hell, why not.
