Stereotype? More like fan art. Think Neil Gaiman's Death character in the graphic novel Sandman. I found the avatar years and years ago and have used it ever since. Sorry you missed the point - better luck next time.
Ahhh well, EvilPoet, there are many definitions that can be used: 1. A member of a nomadic, Caucasoid people of generally swarthy complexion, who migrated originally from India, settling in various parts of Asia, Europe, and, most recently, North America. 2. Romany; the language of the Gypsies. 3. (lowercase) A person held to resemble a gypsy, esp. in physical characteristics or in a traditionally ascribed freedom or inclination to move from place to place.
I take #3 literally.
Since I married in June 2000, this has been the most time I've ever spent living in one house in my whole, long lifetime. Kinda makes me antsy.
Indeed you're correct - there are many definitions. That goes for lots of things not just Gypsy's. You can have your #3. I'm - literally - the first one. On my father's side. There's a reason that #3 definition came about and why Gypsy's (aka Roma) are known for moving around a lot. Check out the timeline on the website I included in my first post. If that's your idea of freedom so be it! On that we will have to agree to disagree.
I'm aware (as in - I've read about it) that the Gypsies in Europe were kicked around and discriminated against, and I hate the fact that there IS such a thing as discrimination in this world. If your father's people were damaged by that I wish you healing. I had no intention of insulting your people.
Here in the US, we do not have that history with the Roma. 'Gypsy' is a pretty neutral descriptor, even a bit dramatic - romantic or dangerous, so to speak.
Knowledge is power but only if you have access to the knowledge. All I ask is that you keep what I posted in mind. And on that note - I bid you all a fond farewell.
